I adore small houses. We already live in one, but we won't live here forever, and sometimes I find myself daydreaming about a future small home. I like to collect images* of these little beauties.
I especially have a soft spot for shotgun houses, which is the style of the little mill house we live in. It's fun to see how people fix them up.
The Tumbleweed Tiny House Company specializes in building small houses. Some of them are reeeeally tiny. The bungalow on the left is only 251 square feet. The one on the right is much more liveable at 874 square feet.
Through the magic of the internet, there are lots of places you can buy plans to build houses of all sizes. These are two of my favorite plans. The top one is 792 square feet, and has a fireplace and not one but TWO covered porches (one off the back of the house). The bottom one is 848 square feet and features built-in bookcases and a wraparound porch. Obviously, porches are very important to me! Can't you just picture my glider on any or all of these?
When I Google "small house images," or "small house plans," many of the pictures I find are little buildings that bill themselves as guest houses or vacation cabins. Screw that--I would totally LIVE in this adorable pool house!
What I like about small houses is that they're cute, there's not much room to accumulate clutter, and not much space to clean, maintain, etc. The hamster wheel life of striving for a bigger house to fill with more stuff doesn't appeal to me. I'd much rather have a little house and use any free time and money for experiences, not stuff.
Are you a fan of small houses? Do you live in one, or would you like to? Or do you think you would feel claustrophobic in a little home?
